Choppee Head Start Center - Waccamaw E.O.C., Inc. Location: Georgetown, SC - 29440 Contact Phone: (843) 485-4231 Details: Our largest program is our Head Start/Early Head Start program. Planning for the first Head Start program in the tri-county area began in 1965 through summer programs. Six years later, in January of 1971, WEOC, Inc. opened its first Head Start Program. We secured the Early Head Start Program in 2010. Early Head Start serves pregnant women, infants and toddlers up to three years of age. WEOC, Inc. currently operates the largest preschool program and employs the largest number of early childhood professionals within Georgetown, Horry and Williamsburg Counties. It is estimated that over 30,000 low-income children received services during the first 50 years of the Head Start program. WEOC, Inc. Head Start/Early Head Start program continues to offer services and offset the negative impact on the economically disadvantaged population by offering comprehensive programs that include: education, nutrition, health, disability, mental health, family services and transportation needs for children and families in poverty. We have adopted Teaching Strategies GOLD® database, a seamless system for assessing children. The State is considering this database for use in all preschool programs to promote interoperability between our Head Start Program and those of State Preschool and Kindergarten through 3rd Grade. We also promote professional development by collaborating with institutions of higher education such as Florence Darlington Technical College, Horry Georgetown Technical College, Williamsburg Technical College, Coastal Carolina University and South Carolina State University. Our Centers are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). WEOC, Inc. Head Start/Early Head Start coordinates with Georgetown, Horry, and Williamsburg School Districts to promote continuity of services and effective transition of Head Start children into the school system. Head Start students performed well on Standardized Tests in Georgetown, Horry, and Williamsburg counties. The partnerships with the Local Educational Agencies ensure that children in primary grades are supported. |
