Details: Wilmington Head Start, Inc. is a program that has been providing services since 1984 to 3 to 5 year old children and their families who reside in Wilmington, Delaware, or whose children attend childcare within the city. The program includes 4 educational centers throughout the city that serves a total of 500 children per year. The services provided by Wilmington Head Start include education, health, disabilities, nutrition, male involvement and family services. To assist with communication and oversight of the overall program, Wilmington Head Start encourages parents participation on both the Parents Committee and the Policy Council.

Details: New Castle County Head Start, Inc. is a federally funded comprehensive early childhood program designed to meet the social, emotional, health, nutritional and physical needs of children from income eligible families. The Early Head Start program provides weekly child-focused home visits for pregnant women and children ages birth to 3 years. The Head Start part day and full day program provides center-based early education service for children ages 3 to 5 years. New Castle County Head Start, Inc. teachers and staff members work closely with children, and their families, to help them gain the skills needed for long-term success in school - both academically and socially. In addition, Head Start offers support programs for the entire family covering a wide range of needs, including housing assistance, employment training, continuing education financial coaching, parenting skills and training opportunities. Head Start directs parents to local community resource organizations for additional services with the goal of helping families achieve self-sufficiency.

Details: West Third Street center is the newest WHS center situated between Van Buren and Jackson Streets/ It is easily accessible to I-95. There are five classrooms each staffed with a teacher and a teacher´s assistant. The center also includes a bilingual Family Service Advocate on site. The center can accommodate 90 children. Just like all of the Wilmington Head Start centers, this center provides nutritious meals consisting of a breakfast and lunch daily. All Wilmington Head Start meals are pork and peanut free. The menus are varied and the children are urged to try new dishes. The children will bring home the monthly menu for the parents to view. The teachers plan a variety of educational activities, using the Creative Curriculumas a framework. We teach them behavioral expectations in the preschool setting using the Positive Behavior Support curriculum. We participate in the University of Delaware’s Human Emotions Lab, teaching our children how to properly identify and handle their emotions through UD’s Emotions Course. The classrooms include various activity centers for the children including blocks, toys and games, art, dramatic play and computers. The computers are installed with recent educational software for prekindergarten children.

Details: The Leslie A. Johnson Center is located at 2401 Northeast Boulevard in the Northeastern section of Wilmington. It is the second largest Wilmington Head Start educational center with 9 classrooms with capacity for 169 children. One of these classrooms accepts Purchase of Care, they are open year-round from 7 AM to 5:30 PM. This center serves the Northeastern section of Wilmington and two small areas in the Western/Southwestern part of the city. Bus service is provided on a first-come, first-served basis to children who need transportation to school, home and/or to daycare (this service is not offered to full day classrooms). The staff includes 9 teachers, 9 teacher assistants and three Family Service Advocates. The teachers plan a variety of educational activities, using the Creative Curriculum as a framework. Details: West End Center is located at 1725 West 8th Street in a West End Neighborhood House building on the west side of the city. We are about 1½ blocks away from St. Francis Hospital. The center has seven classrooms with a total of 118 children. Five of the classrooms are part day morning with times of 8:30 – 1:00. One classroom is part day afternoon with hours of 11:30 - 4:00. The last classroom is full day, full year with hours of 8:00 - 5:00. The staff includes seven teachers, eight teacher assistants and three Family Service Advocates. Just like all of the Wilmington Head Start centers, this center provides nutritious meals consisting of a breakfast and lunch daily. All Wilmington Head Start meals are pork and peanut free. The menus are varied and the children are urged to try new dishes. The children will bring home the monthly menu for the parents to view. The teachers plan a variety of educational activities, using the Creative Curriculum as a framework. We teach them behavioral expectations in the preschool setting using the Positive Behavior Supportcurriculum. We participate in the University of Delaware’s Human Emotions Lab, teaching our children how to properly identify and handle their emotions through UD’s Emotions Course. The classrooms include various centers for the children including blocks, toys and games, art, dramatic play and computers. The dramatic play area is regularly changed into a specific theme area, some examples being a Doctor’s Office, the Grocery Store, the Post Office, a Farm, a Fire Station and an Animal Clinic. The children are able to walk to Woodlawn Library for special programs and often visit Fr. Tucker Park/Playground that is only one block away from the center. The children recently went on a field trip to Coverdale Farm.
