Preschool Details: The Leslie A. Johnson Center is located at 2401 Northeast Boulevard in the Northeastern section of Wilmington. It is the second largest Wilmington Head Start educational center with 9 classrooms with capacity for 169 children. One of these classrooms accepts Purchase of Care, they are open year-round from 7 AM to 5:30 PM. This center serves the Northeastern section of Wilmington and two small areas in the Western/Southwestern part of the city. Bus service is provided on a first-come, first-served basis to children who need transportation to school, home and/or to daycare (this service is not offered to full day classrooms). The staff includes 9 teachers, 9 teacher assistants and three Family Service Advocates. The teachers plan a variety of educational activities, using the Creative Curriculum as a framework. We teach them behavioral expectations in the preschool setting using the Positive Behavior Support curriculum. We participate in the University of Delaware’s Human Emotions Lab, teaching our children how to properly identify and handle their emotions through UD’s Emotions Course. The classrooms include various centers for the children including blocks, toys and games, art, dramatic play and computers. Just like all of the Wilmington Head Start centers, this center provides nutritious meals consisting of a breakfast and lunch daily. All Wilmington Head Start meals are pork and peanut free. The menus are varied and the children are urged to try new dishes. The children will bring home the monthly menu for the parents to view. Please see the additional information concerning Nutrition.
Eligible Requirements: There are several requirements for your child to be accepted within Wilmington Head Start. Please read this list carefully and should you have any questions, our personnel will be happy to discuss this with you. • The child must live in or attend a childcare within the city limits of Wilmington, Delaware. • The child must be 3 years and less than 5 years old by August 31 of the enrollment year. • If your child has an IEP or IFSP then they must be 3 years old by December 31 of the enrollment year. The family income must not exceed the income guidelines published by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Age Requirements: 3 to 5 years old
How to Apply: You may complete a pre-enrollment application over the phone (302) 762-8038 ext. 10 or you can visit any of our six centers . This application should be completely filled out and taken or mailed to one of the centers. Once it is received, you will be contacted within 7 to 10 business days by a Family Service Advocate (FSA) to set up the enrollment appointment. Please note that the bottom half of your pre-enrollment application details the documents that you will need to bring with you to your enrollment appointment. Forgetting any of these documents as well as missing your appointment will delay the possible enrollment of your child. During your enrollment appointment you will be required to complete several documents and answer questions pertaining to your child's health and physical well-being. The FSA will also explain our program and answer any questions that you may have. At the end of the appointment, your child will automatically be placed on the waiting list until he/she is selected, if eligible. If you have additional time, don't forget to ask for a tour of the facility (however this center may not be the one your child attends). We're proud of our centers and like to show them every chance we get.
