The New York Foundling has operated Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Puerto Rico since 1984. We provide Head Start and Early Head Start services to 1,161 children and their families in 28 centers. The goal of the program is to increase social and education competence of young children and low income families in the most impoverished communities on the island. Our services are comprehensive, child centered and developmentally age appropriate for children from birth to five years of age. We also provide services to pregnant women and families, including extended family members, which is an important cultural aspect in Puerto Rico. The program is staffed by certified teachers, assistant teachers, social workers, nurses, mental health professionals, cooks, support staff, and administrators to deliver quality services in each center.
