For thirty-seven years we have been providing a constant flow of services to children and families in St. Lucie County through the Head Start Program. Funding is provided through the Department of Health and Human Services. Head Start is a national program, which provides comprehensive developmental services for low income, pre-school children ages three to five, and social services for their families. The Early Head Start program provides comprehensive child development and family support services to low-income families with children under three and pregnant women. The Early Head Start program is the product of bipartisan legislation signed into law by President Clinton in May 1994 with the reauthorization of the Head Start Act. The program is designed to provide services that create an environment that builds upon and responds to the unique strengths and needs of each child and family, including: developmentally appropriate activities for infants and toddlers (both in and out of the home), home visits (especially for families with newborns and other infants), parent involvement (including parent-child activities), comprehensive developmental and health services (including services for women prior to, during and after pregnancy), nutrition, and ongoing support to parents through case management and peer support groups.
