Details:
West End Center is located at 1725 West 8th Street in a West End Neighborhood House building on the west side of the city. We are about 1½ blocks away from St. Francis Hospital. The center has seven classrooms with a total of 118 children. Five of the classrooms are part day morning with times of 8:30 – 1:00. One classroom is part day afternoon with hours of 11:30 - 4:00. The last classroom is full day, full year with hours of 8:00 - 5:00. The staff includes seven teachers, eight teacher assistants and three Family Service Advocates. Just like all of the Wilmington Head Start centers, this center provides nutritious meals consisting of a breakfast and lunch daily. All Wilmington Head Start meals are pork and peanut free. The menus are varied and the children are urged to try new dishes. The children will bring home the monthly menu for the parents to view. The teachers plan a variety of educational activities, using the Creative Curriculum as a framework. We teach them behavioral expectations in the preschool setting using the Positive Behavior Supportcurriculum. We participate in the University of Delaware’s Human Emotions Lab, teaching our children how to properly identify and handle their emotions through UD’s Emotions Course. The classrooms include various centers for the children including blocks, toys and games, art, dramatic play and computers. The dramatic play area is regularly changed into a specific theme area, some examples being a Doctor’s Office, the Grocery Store, the Post Office, a Farm, a Fire Station and an Animal Clinic. The children are able to walk to Woodlawn Library for special programs and often visit Fr. Tucker Park/Playground that is only one block away from the center. The children recently went on a field trip to Coverdale Farm.
