Educational Alliance has been at the forefront of Head Start for nearly 50 years. In 1965, EA was chosen to run a national pilot program of Head Start. And in 1995, we were chosen to run one of the country’s first Early Head Start programs. Our Head Start classrooms in the Manny Cantor Center are the only early childhood education classrooms on the Lower East Side to receive National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation and have been chosen as one of 100 programs nationally invited to the national Head Start office to mentor new Head Start directors. In addition, we have been recognized as a model for excellence, most recently by New York City’s Head Start Sponsoring Board, which recommended us to be a host site for an Austrian group of educators interested in building an exchange relationship to support the development of a similar program in their country. Head Start and Early Head Start offer a high quality educational experience to low income children in eight locations on the Lower East Side and in the East Village. Our Head Start programs supplement academic learning with opportunities for children to express and develop their creativity, learn about health and wellness, and explore their community. Families receive assistance with employment and social services. Eligibility is based on Head Start guidelines. Head Start serves children aged 3 to 5. Early Head Start serves children from birth to 3 years.
