Ironbound Early Head Start - Ironbound Community Corporation Location: Newark, NJ - 07105 Contact Phone: (973) 589-6873 Details: Ironbound’s Early Head Start is located in the Ironbound Early Learning Center at 1 New York Avenue. This facility is a state-of-the-art, LEED certified center built with the support of a $5.5 million donation from a private philanthropist and $1 million in NJ Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credits from PSEG, Valley National bank, and TD Bank. The program is funded through the federal Office of Head Start and foundation grants from the Turrell Fund, Schumann Fund for NJ, and the Healthcare Foundation of NJ. Early Head Start provides care, education, and interventions for at-risk children ages birth to 3 and their families, as well as pregnant women. The program serves the neediest: participating families are at or below 100% of the poverty level (approximately $25,000 for a family of 4) and are selected based upon the greatest needs. Research shows that the earliest years of a child’s life are the most critical for healthy brain development and that children in disadvantaged families typically receive less support in many regards, from the vocabulary they are exposed to to the number of books in the household to the stressors their families face. Early Head Start attempts to address these challenges with well-trained teachers in classes with a 1:4 adult to child ratio and comprehensive supportive services for children and families, including medical examinations, mental health care, and interventions to address various disabilities and delays. ICC’s anecdotal evidence and families’ reports indicate that children “graduating” from Early Head Start and moving into Preschool are typically better prepared socially, emotionally and otherwise to make the transition, play alongside their peers, and begin learning immediately. |

Mcdc - Baldwin Street Site - Montclair Child Development Center Inc Location: Glen Ridge, NJ - 07028 Contact Phone: (973) 748-5901 Details: The cornerstone of our agency is to provide high quality inclusive education for all MCDC Head Start and Early Head Start students. We do this by utilizing a highly respected and well research curriculum entitled HighScope and by providing a safe, supportive and nurturing learning environment. We offer both center base and home base services. The HighScope Curriculum is based on the belief that young children build or “construct” their knowledge of the world and are "active learners." This means learning is not simply a process of adults providing information to children. Rather, children discover things through direct experience with people, objects, events, and ideas. Young children learn best by being fully engaged in activities and from pursuing their own interests while being actively supported and challenged by adults. In preschool, the child's work is to explore, participate and experience. In 2014, MCDC began to explore the Reggio Emilia Inspired Approach to Learning, as an enhancement to our curriculum to support our student’s development. The Reggio Emilia Inspired Approach to Learning (REIA) recognizes the child as an active participant in their learning and environment. Children are encouraged to follow their own interests. In Reggio, classrooms provide an abundance of materials such as clay, paint, items from their environment and writing implements. Children use these materials to represent concepts that they are learning in a hands-on way. The Reggio approach views the parent as an essential resource for the child's learning. In Reggio-inspired classrooms, teachers use a variety of documentation methods, such as cameras, tape recorders and journals, to track children's thoughts and ideas as they play together or work with materials. Together, HighScope and Reggio provide an educational continuum where children learn through active participation, exploration of personal interests, engagement with peers and adults, and expanded opportunities for art and creativity supported ways that meaningful and developmentally appropriate. |
