Preschool Details: Head Start is a Federal program for young children from low-income families. The children who attend Head Start schools participate in a variety of educational activities. They also receive free medical and dental care, have healthy meals and snacks, and enjoy playing indoors and outdoors in a safe setting. Head Start endeavors to help all children succeed. The NHPS Head Start program works to meet high standards for delivering quality services to children and their families. Children participate in fun activities while developing positive social skills. Services are offered to meet the special needs of children with disabilities.
Eligible Requirements: To be eligible for Head Start, families must be residents of New Haven and have incomes that are below, at or slightly above the federal poverty levels. Children who are 3 and 4 years old are eligible for Head Start services. Children can attend through their 5th birthday. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Head start welcomes children with disabilities. We enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the poverty guidelines as well.
Age Requirements: 3 to 5 years old
How to Apply: Families enroll through a centralized application process. Applications available starting in April. To make an appointment call 203-946-6950 or 946-6179. Applications and documents must be reviewed by NHPS personnel. Head Start regulations require a detailed application process which is best accomplished by a personal appointment with a registration staff member. NO APPLICATION WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL ALL DOCUMENTATION IS COMPLETE. Once all documents are in and registration is complete, families will receive notification of their child's specific school assignment over the summer. School assignments are based upon student's neighborhood locations and availability. Eligibility requirements do not change based upon site placement. When all Head Start programs are full, students are placed on a waiting list. What to bring to your appointment: 1. Your child’s official long form birth certificate, legal custody or guardianship papers if applicable. 2. Proof of New Haven residency (a current lease or utility bill in your name) or a notarized statement which includes all your family member names from the person you’re living with and their lease or current utility bill. 3. Proof of income consists of: Current and consecutive four weekly or two bi-weekly pay stubs for you and your spouse, a currently dated monthly budget statement from the State Department of Social Services, Social Security office, Child Enforcement Bureau or any other income source. All non-working parent(s) needs to provide a notarized statement of no income. No bank statements will be accepted for proof of income. Note: If a parent submits a notarized statement of no income, they need to also provide supporting documents with it (Ex: I applied for cash assistance but was denied; bring the denial letter; I was getting unemployment but benefits expired; bring the expiration letter, etc.) also (additional paperwork may be requested to consider your eligibility for the program). 4. A recent physical exam completed and signed by a health care provider on the State of Connecticut medical evaluation form with proof of a 2 year old or greater lead, HGB/HCT test results, a TB assessment, immunization records to include seasonal flu vaccination and health insurance card. Additional documentation may be needed upon review by the nurse. 5. A completed dental exam (performed in the last six months).
