Preschool Details: Early Head Start is a federally-funded community-based program for low-income families with infants and toddlers (ages 0 to 3), as well as pregnant women. The program provides prenatal education to promote healthy prenatal outcomes for pregnant women and educational services that enhance the development of infants and toddlers. Head Start is a federally-funded community-based program for low-income families with preschool-age children (ages 3 to 5). Head Start is focused on making sure children are school-ready by engaging them in activities that promote social-emotional, physical, cognitive and educational development. In addition, Head Start offers family case management, disability services and support, connection to mental health services for children and families, and health screenings for children. Your child will receive a healthy meal and/or snack during the day.
Eligible Requirements: Head Start and Early Head Start offer free services to families living in the towns where our programs operate in York County. Families who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), or other benefits, may be eligible. Head Start is for children ages 3 to 5 years. Early Head Start is available for pregnant women, and children from birth to age 3 years.
Age Requirements: Birth to 5 years old
How to Apply: York County Community Action Head Start and Early Head Start are currently accepting referrals. The referral is the first step to apply for Head Start or Early Head Start. The referral is just a short form that lets us collect some basic information to determine eligibility and conduct follow-up with the family. Eligible parents/guardians will be called to complete a full application; completing a referral does not mean the child/family is on the waitlist. You can make a referral for Head Start or Early Head Start by calling the Head Start office at (207) 459-2963, or by completing a Referral Card.
