Preschool Details: Located in the rural area outside of Whiteville in Columbus County, Mt. Olive Head Start Center provides services to 80 enrollees and their parents in a four classroom setting. The center, originally operated by Sencland Community Action, Inc., came under the umbrella of Southeastern Community & Family Services, Inc., in 1987. Mt. Olive has a 4 Star Rating from the North Carolina Dept. of Health and Human Services Division of Child Development and Early Education. Our staff are highly qualified to deliver age and developmentally appropriate educational opportunities to our enrollees in a warm and inclusive atmosphere. Each teacher has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field, and our assistant teachers hold Associate degrees in ECE or a related field. Parents are recognized as their child’s first and best teacher and are encouraged to be an active participant in their education through volunteering at the center.
Eligible Requirements: Applications are taken on children that are at least 3 or 4 years old by August 31 of the program year (class age). In addition, SCFS are licensed by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Childcare to serve children 3 - 5 years of age (actual age). Therefore, a child must be 3 years old before entry into Head Start classroom for Head Start services. Priority will be given as follows: 1. Eligible four year olds within income guidelines will be served first with consideration to the following: A. Documented disabled within income guidelines. B. Suspected disabled within income guidelines. C. Hardship (Ex: abused or neglected, impoverished, isolated child, physically or mentally ill parents, drug abusers, fosters care and homeless). 2. Documented four year olds disabled over income guidelines. 3. Over income guideline four year olds- lowest to highest income, beginning with Category 1, as listed on the SCFS’ Head Start Program Poverty Guidelines. 4. Eligible three year olds within income guidelines will be served with consideration to the following: A. Documented disabled within income guidelines. B. Suspected disabled within income guidelines. C. Hardship (Ex: abused or neglected, impoverished, isolated children, physically or mentally ill parents, drug abusers, foster care and homeless). 5. Documented three year olds disabled over income guidelines. 6. Over income guideline three year olds- lowest to highest income, beginning with Category 1, as listed on the SCFS, Inc. Head Start Program Poverty Guidelines. Special Note: 1. Income eligibility is determined according to HHS guidelines and wage verification. 2. Acceptance of over-the income applicants will be 10 % maximum (including documented disabled and returnees).
