Preschool Details: MountainHeart Community Services operates a Head Start and an Early Head Start Program in Wyoming County, West Virginia. While both programs focus on the whole child philosophy of child development, the Head Start program serves children ages three to five while the Early Head Start program serves pregnant moms and children from birth to three years of age. All areas of the child’s development are important for a child to succeed in school and in life. Parents are considered the first and most important teacher of their child.
Eligible Requirements: A child is eligible for Head Start if the child is three years old prior to September 1 of the current enrollment year and not age eligible for public school kindergarten. Children under the age of three and pregnant women are eligible for Early Head Start. The Head Start program may accept children on their third birthday throughout the program year. Head Start/Early Head Start is a federally funded program that is required to fill at least 65% of its enrollment slots with families whose income is at or below 100% of the federal poverty guidelines while 35% can be at 130% or below the federal poverty guidelines. Head Start/Early Head Start may serve families over the poverty guidelines for up to 10% of its funded enrollment. Ten percent of the enrollment slots must be filled with children with disabilities. Families receiving SSI and public assistance are automatically eligible, as are foster children and homeless families. All interested families are encouraged to apply regardless of their income level. Collaborations with the local public school system allows the program to serve additional families.
Age Requirements: 0 to 5 years old
How to Apply: Applications for Head Start/Early Head Start must include income verification, a valid birth certificate for the child, and the child’s shot record prior to be processed for enrollment.
