Preschool Details: The Early Head Start Program was created in 1994 and provides the comprehensive services of Head Start to pregnant women, infants, toddlers, and their families. In our effort to support these families, we provide extended day care services for working families and families involved in vocational and educational training. The JCCEO Early Head Start Program (EHS) operates twelve months a year, five days a week, and currently serves 216 infants and toddlers, 32 pregnant women, and their families. Parents are also offered opportunities to develop skills that will help them function more effectively as adults in their day-to-day lives. Families are encouraged to enhance their parent/child relationships by participating in all aspects of the program. Early Head Start also has a prenatal component that delivers services through a home-based model. Families participating in this component receive home visits once a week for ninety minutes each visit and they visit the center twice a month for a full day of activities. When women participating in the prenatal component give birth to their babies, the Health Assistant visits the home within two weeks of the baby's birth to assure the health and well being of both the mother and the child. These babies enter the center as space becomes available. Families learn about child development, health, and nutrition by talking with other parents, attending classes, seeing films and demonstrations, and going on field trips. Opportunities are provided for parents to develop skills that are useful in other aspects of their lives through sessions on sewing, budgeting, home improvement, exercise, computer literacy, basic adult education, and GED classes. JCCEO Early Head Start is committed to making a difference in the lives of pregnant women and families with infants and toddlers. Early Head Start is located at seven centers, and at several Community Partner Centers.
