Preschool Details: Like Early Head Start, Alexandria Head Start (AHS) promotes kindergarten readiness for children from three to five years of age. Classes develop childrens’ early reading and mathematics skills, as well as their emotional, intellectual, and physical development. Children and families also receive health and nutrition services and referrals. Parents are also able to benefit from the support of Family Service Specialists who assist parents with their own educational and vocational goals. Like Early Head Start, AHS services are provided at several sites across the city as a result of partnerships we have forged with the City of Alexandria, Alexandria City Public Schools, and two faith-based institutions (St. Paul’s Church and Fairlington United Methodist Church).
Eligible Requirements: All low-income families and families of children with special needs in Alexandria are invited to register. Families are ranked based on income and needs, and eligible families not accepted due to limited space will be offered a spot on the waiting list for that year.
