Preschool Details: As one of the oldest programs offered by Hinds County Human Resource Agency (HCHRA), Project Head Start has provided quality child development services for pre-school children and their families across Hinds County for more than 30 years. Its goal is to equip every child with the academic and social skills needed to enter and master kindergarten, thereby giving children a quality head start. Head Start operates 16 centers throughout Hinds County for more than 2,000 three- and four-year old children and their families. In coordination with I.S. Sanders YMCA and Willowood Development Center, children age three through grade five receive after-school and full-day summer services at the parent’s expense. Providing child development and family support services on a year-round basis, Early Head Start offers comprehensive child and family development activities to low-income pregnant women and families with infants and toddlers. Children from birth until their third birthday receive quality child care while parents obtain educational services and resources at one of four centers across Hinds County.
Eligible Requirements: Early Head Start: Program serves infants and toddlers up to three years old and young pregnant mothers with priority given to pregnant teens. Families of children with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Head Start: Program serves three and four year old children with priority given to children who are at least three years old on or before September 1st. Children from families who meet the age criterion and the family income guidelines and those with a disability, are eligible for enrollment. Families who exceed the family income guidelines may apply; however they will be placed on a waiting list to accommodate families who do.
Age Requirements: 6 weeks to 5 years old
How to Apply: All applicants are required to go to one of the sites so that a Head Start staff member can meet with you and go over your application. You MUST bring all of the following: Your child’s birth certificate; Proof of income for 12 months (one of the following): W-2 Forms, 1040 Tax Form, Check Stub, Letter from Employer, TANF Letter, SSI/SSA/SSD Letter (Other items subject to approval); Proof of Residence (such as a utility bill, mortgage statement or lease agreement): Light Bill, Water Bill, Gas Bill, Phone Bill, Cable Bill, Lease Agreement, Mortgage Statement (Other items subject to approval).
