Preschool Details: The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Start provides comprehensive child development services that help children and their families achieve their full potential through education, health, nutrition, social and disability services, and parent involvement activities and training. Head Start’s mission is to provide a comprehensive learning environment to children that is respectful of their cultures and to assist families in reaching self-sufficiency though the combined efforts of parents, community and staff. Federal performance standards, a carefully implemented curriculum and assessment process, well-trained teachers and staff, and required programmatic evaluations ensure that The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Start maintains a high-quality educational environment so children can develop skills to be successful in school and life.
Eligible Requirements: The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Start enrolls pregnant women and children from birth to age five. The program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Families qualify if their income falls at or below federal poverty guidelines. The family must live in one of the 13 school districts in our service area.
Age Requirements: Birth to 5 years old
How to Apply: The first step is to call the center nearest you. You will be asked general questions to determine eligibility. If you are eligible based on where you live and income level, an appointment will be scheduled for you to meet with one of our family advocates. Even if you are determined to be eligible, unfortunately, we cannot enroll all eligible children since we are funded and only have room for a certain number of children. Enrollment determination is based on family need. If you are not accepted into the program, you will be placed on a waiting list. The family advocate can also refer you to other programs to help you pay for child care and/or preschool, such as a child care subsidy through the Suffolk County Department of Social Services and the Universal Pre-kindergarten program through your local school district.
