Preschool Details: At the Brooklyn Chinese-American Association (BCA), we target the needs of low-income families by offering childcare services through the Head Start program. Our Head Start program provides free services to children with special needs. It emphasizes for children to become independent and responsible. The program’s focus is on preschoolers’ development in early reading and math skills that are necessary to succeed in school. Our Head Start program supports children’s growth through health and nutritional needs. It embarks parent involvement in committees and through policy council members which is comprised of the Head Start parents. Our Head Start program collaborates and builds partnerships with resource centers within the community. BCA’s Head Start Program has been offering various intergenerational activities. These activities, including arts and crafts projects surrounding cultural festivals, enabled parents to become active participants in their children’s everyday learning. In particular, our Head Start program has been actively getting parents involved in the classroom activities through working as volunteers in planning and implementing classroom and program activities. A Policy Council was set up to involve parents in the program’s decision-making process and to enable parents to contribute their input and feedback.
